About the Owners
Morat family bakeries have been a mid-west tradition for over 70 years. Frank Schramm, Dan Morat's grandfather, came to the United States from Vienna Austria in the 1920s. After working in Chicago area bakeries, Frank opened his own shop in Hart, Michigan in 1937. Just before the start of World War II, Dan's father Carl Morat took over the Hart shop. Carl later took his business to Reed City, Michigan. Dan learned his craft growing up in the Hart and Reed City bakeries. In 1962, at the age of 22, Dan started his own bakery in Whitehall, Michigan. Over the next 30 years, Morat's Bakery became well known throughout Muskegon and Oceana counties. In the 70s and 80s, Dan and his wife Jane (Fuller) operated bakery shops in Hart, Shelby and Whitehall, Michigan. In 1988, Dan and Jane retired to the Fuller family farm house a half mile down the road from today's store. Retirement lasted 6 months. In 1989, they reopened at the site of Web & Mary's Tiffany Bake Shop which operated in Mears from 1915-1945. The building, closed for decades, hasn't changed structurally since the 1930s. A summertime favorite of travelers to the Silver Lake/Lake Michigan area Morat's Old Tiffany Bake Shop in Mears Michigan is in its 18th year of operation
